This is a story of  misfits from the village of Gardinovci. Two women work as shepherds, spending the whole day with cows and sheep. Two old bachelors, old gardener Sever and the basket maker Stevan toil their lives away in hard work. Nature around them is idyllic and  rich, fields and gardens green, animals graze, vegetable grows and fruit ripens.
These four lonely people meet and life seems to be even more beautiful....But only seems to. Shepherdess Damjana tries to poison Sever, whereas the old Stevan, aroused and disturbed by the young woman at his side, confesses the sin which was heavy burden of his consciousness: back at the time of the forced collectivization, he killed a man, a young communist activist who came to "inspect his property."
He swung his ax and...

Both the common lives of "small people" carry drama of live and death within themselves.
